In fertility clinics, not every member of your team will have experienced IVF firsthand, and that’s completely okay. Empathy in fertility care doesn’t have to come from living the journey yourself. Instead, it’s built through how your team listens, responds, and supports the patients sitting in front of them every day.

For patients going through infertility and IVF, the emotional weight can be significant. They’re often navigating uncertainty, disappointment, hope, and complex decisions all at once. What they need most from your team isn’t perfection or all the answers, it’s to feel understood, heard, and supported.

Why Empathy Matters in Fertility Care

Patient experience in fertility clinics goes far beyond clinical outcomes. The way your team communicates and connects with patients can shape how supported they feel throughout their IVF journey.

Phrases that unintentionally downplay a patient’s experience can be harmful. Each person’s journey through infertility is unique, and their feelings always have a reason.

5. Create a safe space for honesty
Patients are more likely to open up when they feel safe and not judged. This also allows your team to signpost appropriate emotional support resources when needed.
